Paths to Action
Chapter Eight: The Politics of Family and Fertility

  1. Compare and contrast the web sites dedicated to pro-life or pro-choice viewpoints. You might start with National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) and National Right to Life Committee. What types of appeals do these organizations make? What are the policy priorities for each group of organizations? What type of action are they urging? Can you locate a middle ground in the abortion debate or has it become too politicized?

  2. Evaluate the fetal protection movement in relation to women’s autonomy and pursuit of equality. What types of policies limit women’s equality? How should the interests of a developing fetus be balanced with those of an adult woman? Evaluate the policy proposals of the current administration and Congress related to fetal protection. How are women’s interests advanced or limited under these policies? Prepare a report for your classmates. Include in your report a way for them to take action if they become interested in the subject. For example, you might pass out information about how to contact your Congressional Delegation or how to write to the President.
