Paths to Action Chapter Five: Women as Political Actors – Emerging Insiders and Seasoned Outsiders
- Carefully examine the Platform for Action adopted in Beijing. There are nine broad areas of focus in the document. Choose one that you believe is crucial to women in your state. Evaluate the laws passed by your state legislature during the last session in the area that you’ve identified (you can usually access a "legislative roundup" summary of the year’s actions by contacting the legislative library in the state capitol). Has there been any action? If not, why not? Design a three-point action plan to move on the issue you’ve chosen. Follow up by writing to your state representatives.
- Carefully read and analyze CEDAW. Write a letter to your U.S. Senators in support or opposition to the treaty. In your letter detail at least three reasons for your position. Urge others in your class to do the same. You might also want to participate in the petition drives organized by Amnesty International and other organizations. Do a web-based search on Google for organizations already taking action. Use the keyword "CEDAW." What types of action beyond writing letters to the US Senate and signing petitions do they advocate?
