Paths to Action
Chapter Three: Suffrage Accomplished – Women as Political Participants

  1. Find out more about how young men and women at your school view politics and participation in politics. Design a short (no more than five questions) survey that you can use to talk with male and females about the issues they think are important and how they participate in politics. Is there any evidence of the community involvement connection with voting described in Chapter 3 on your campus? Is there any evidence that men and women view politics differently or approach participation differently? Summarize your findings and present them to your class. Be careful to state that this is not a scientific survey since you will more than likely conduct non-random interviews with your peers!

  2. After reading the Controversies of Equality feature in Chapter Three, organize a discussion about sexual harassment and women's responsibility either to "blow the whistle" or to take care of themselves first and foremost. Look carefully at your own institution's policy on reporting sexual harassment. Is it designed to address harassment broadly or to address individual incidents?
