Chapter Six: Education and the Pursuit of Equality

A.  What is it about education that causes it to be restricted to an elite few even today? Why were women excluded from higher education for so long? How might society be different if women and other restricted groups had been granted admission to all forms of education from the beginning of time?

B.  What is the gender balance at your institution? Are there more men or women? If there are more women (assuming a coeducational institution), are there any signs that the university is worried and taking action to attract more men to campus? How do you feel about gender balanced enrollments? Should universities take affirmative action to make sure that men and women are equally represented on campus? What would the benefits and costs be to such an approach?

C.  Have you ever experienced gender discrimination in the classroom? Under what circumstances did it take place and how did you address the situation? Given your personal experience, do you believe that policies against discrimination in education or some other intervention are necessary? Discuss.

D.  Access the article, "The War Against Boys". Read both the article and the letters in response to the original article. Evaluate the points Sommers makes and the rebuttals offered in the letter. Where do you stand?
