Chapter Five: Women as Political Actors – Emerging Insiders and Seasoned Outsiders

A.  Explore the Women Leaders Online web site. Identify three pressing issues now before the U.S. Congress. What role have women in Congress played in sponsoring or moving these items forward? Would you consider any or all of the issues you identified "women’s issues"? Why or why not?

B.  What type of follow up has there been to the Beijing and the Beijing+5 meetings? By looking at the relevant web sites and other information you may cover in class, compare and contrast the Clinton and Bush administrations’ efforts on behalf of women in the United States and the world. What impact might the Bush administration have in shaping the agenda for women in the world? Use specific examples in your evaluation.

C.  By looking at a number of the web sites listed above, compare the domestic and international women’s rights agendas. How are they similar and how are they different? Does activism on a global scale influence domestic politics and vice versa? If you wanted to get involved, what would your first step be and what issue would you choose to work on?

D.  Evaluate the content and effectiveness of the National Women’s Political Caucus advertisement, "What if?" on page 133 of the text. (If you have never seen the actual Thomas/Hill hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, check with your media center to see if they have a videotape or you can also access transcripts online through the University of Virginia web site.) In what ways is the NWPC using descriptive, symbolic and substantive representation to appeal to potential donors and members? In your judgement, is it an effective ad?
