Chapter Two: All Rights Are Not Equal: Suffrage versus the Equal Rights Amendment

A.  In 1848, the first women’s declaration of rights was set forth in the Declaration of Sentiments adopted at the Seneca Falls Convention. In 1968, the National Organization for Women issued a Bill of Rights for Women adopted at the inaugural 1967 National Conference. In 1998, in celebration of 150 years of the women’s rights movement, NOW adopted a contemporary Declaration of Sentiments. Compare the three documents. Which issues of equality for women remain unresolved? Compare and contrast how the themes of legal equality versus fairness for women appear in the three documents?

B.  After reading about the Constitutional Equality Amendment, think carefully about how this amendment differs from the first amendment proposed in 1923 and the amendment sent to the states in 1972. In what ways does this amendment try to capture both paths to equality?

C.  The National Park Service web site and tour of women’s history was created to mark the 150th anniversary of the women’s movement in 1998. Read the introduction and then from the tool bar at the bottom of the page, choose one area to explore (Historic Preservation, the Progressive Era, the Arts, Professionals, or Equal Rights). After reading the essay, make a list of three sites of interest referenced in the essay. Go to the list of sites and click on each of the sites you have selected. Why have these sites been preserved? How did the event or woman honored by this site influence the women’s movement? In what ways does gender shape how we know history?
