Chapter Six: Education and the Pursuit of Equality
1.
Evaluate the success of Title IX in ending discrimination against women in education. In what areas has it been most successful? Are there still areas where women face discrimination? If so, what might be done legislatively to combat this lingering discrimination?
2.
United States politics and ideology has been heavily influenced by the Enlightenment philosophers who believed education was crucial in allowing humans to reach their full capacity for reason and ultimately citizenship. How has the debate over women's education been influenced by liberal philosophers? In what ways were many liberal theorists blind to women when they advocated education for everyone?
3.
Examine Table 6.3 (page 191) on the intersection of gender, race, education and income. In what ways is discrimination evident in the data here?
4.
Make an argument in favor of or against single-sex education. You may choose to limit your argument to a single class (e.g. English classes for males only) or argue more broadly (e.g. women's colleges). In what ways do students benefit from an education in a single-sex environment? What are the limits? What does the law currently say about single-sex education?
