End-of-Chapter Activities Chapter 12: Studying only a Few Cases: Intensive Approaches
Activity 12.3 Designing an Experiment for a Hypothetical Situation
After Hillary Clinton moved to New York to run for the U.S. Senate from that state, many people wondered what the effect of her being a "carpetbagger" would have on the likelihood of New York residents voting for her. The problem for doing an empirical research project on this topic is that there are very few actual "carpetbagger" cases to study. Using the idea of presenting hypothetical situations to subjects as described in the Geva and Hanson study about support for the use of force in foreign relations, design an experiment that would isolate the effect of "carpetbagging" on the likelihood of subjects voting for a candidate who moved to a state for the sole purpose of seeking elective office rather than a candidate who was an established resident of the state.
