End-of-Chapter Activities
Chapter 3: Formulating Problems and Hypotheses

Activity 3.1
Identifying Examples of Ethics Violations in Social and Political Research

Early in this chapter we discussed a number of ethical dilemmas facing social science researchers. They included risk of harm to subjects, lack of voluntariness in participation, coercion of subjects, covert research, invasion of privacy, and deception. In this activity you will search the Web for examples of alleged unethical treatment of research subjects. Enter search terms such as "ethical violations in social research" or "deception in social research" (we are sure that you can think of many others) in a search engine such as Google or Alta Vista. Locate and describe three examples of alleged ethical violations and relate them to the dilemmas mentioned above. Be sure to provide the URLs (Web addresses) of your sources.
