Public Policymaking, Sixth Edition
James E. Anderson, Texas A& M University
Chapter 1: The Study of Public Policy

Divide the class into five groups and assign one of the five approaches to policy study outlined by Anderson to each group. Each group should develop a short presentation (roughly five minutes) on the approach. The presentation should include a general description of the basic underlying principles of the approach, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. Then, with the different typologies of public policy (distributive, symbolic, etc) in mind, the groups should determine if their approach is appropriate for analyzing one or more of the different types of policy or if they think that it is not appropriate for any. The groups should be prepared to provide their reasoning for this determination. Groups can decide whether to have one spokesperson for the presentation or to assign different portions of their presentation to different group members.
