Contest winner and best-practice idea announced!

Congratulations to Aurora Camacho de Schmidt, first-year Spanish instructor at Swarthmore College, for submitting a winning entry in our best-practices contest. Here's how her class begins two days a week:

Tossing the frog
Students find three complex sentences written on the board. They repeat the sentence, identify the parts of speech, and practice changing the subject. Seated in a semi-circle, one student then tosses a beanbag frog to another person, who must produce the sentence with the changed subject announced by Ms. Camacho de Schmidt. As the weeks progress, the sentences become more complex.

"Tossing the frog works well," says Ms. Camacho de Schmidt, "because it drills the lesson's vocabulary and verbs, introduces new vocabulary, keeps students alert and involved, creates a sense of community, and fosters an informal but hard-working atmosphere in the classroom. The frog becomes so much a part of our life that we raffle it at the end of the term."
