WinZip / StuffIt Support Page
Downloading and Viewing Compressed Files: Step by Step
This support page is to guide you through the process of downloading, opening, and viewing files that have been compressed or "zipped" by a compression utility. If you have not yet downloaded and installed an "unzipping" utility, please go to the Compressed Files section of our Web Site Support Page to download and install one of the utilities now before proceeding.
Once you have Stuffit Expander™ or WinZip© installed on your computer, you are ready to download and unzip files as follows:
Using WinZip on a PC (Windows)
STEP I: Click the link of the zip file you wish to download from our book site.
STEP II: In the File Download dialog box choose: Save this file to disk, and click OK.
STEP III: In the Save As dialog box choose a directory folder from the drop down list where you want to place the compressed file. The default location is on your desktop.
STEP IV: Once the compressed file is downloaded, the Download Complete dialog box will appear. Click on the Open button. This will open the WinZip utility window.
STEP V: The WinZip window will show a list of files available to be "unzipped" from the compressed file. This list may often consist of only one file, such as a document or presentation (.pdf, .doc, .ppt).
Click on the files you wish to unzip, then click on the Extract button. The Extract dialog box will appear.
STEP VI: Scroll through the Folders/Drives: window in the dialog box and click on the directory folder where you wish to place your file(s), then click on the Extract button. The files you chose in Step Five will be "unzipped" and placed into this folder. Close the Winzip Utility.
STEP VII: You can now open the file(s) you've unzipped in the application that created them.
NOTE: You made need a helper application such as Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® (.pdf files) or PowerPoint Viewer (.ppt files) to view these files after they have been unzipped. If this is the case, please visit our Web Site Support Page to download these viewers for free.
