What is an eBook?

"eBook" is short for "electronic book", a digital version of a print book that offers convenience, offline access, and unique capabilities for students who wish to access textbook content digitally.

eBooks are particularly well suited for students who use laptops in-class and at home. Houghton Mifflin discourages students will limited computer access from purchasing eBooks.

What software do I need?

Houghton Mifflin eBooks use Adobe eBook software. You will need either Adobe Reader 7 or Adobe Digital Editions software to view an eBook. Adobe Reader 8 is not compatible with Houghton Mifflin eBooks.

Do you have Adobe Reader 7 installed? You may continue to use Adobe Reader 7. Or, you may upgrade to Adobe Digital Editions if you prefer its more streamlined eBook reading interface.

Do you have Adobe Reader 8 installed? You must also install Adobe Digital Editions.

How do I activate Adobe Reader 7 to read eBooks?

You must activate Adobe Reader 7 before you can use it to read Digital Editions. Adobe Reader 7 automatically starts an "Easy Activation" the first time you attempt to open a protected Digital Edition.

You can also manually activate an Adobe Reader 7 account. Here are the steps:
  • Connect to the Internet
  • Open Adobe Reader 7.0
  • In Adobe Reader, choose File > Digital Editions > Authorize Devices
  • If the Security Alert dialog box opens, click OK to connect to the Adobe DRM Activation Website and then follow the on-screen prompts
  • To transfer eBooks to other computers, you must complete the manual activation process

Can I download the eBook to more than one computer?

No. You cannot download the eBook to more than 1 computer.

If your computer crashes and you need another copy of a Houghton Mifflin eBook, you must contact Houghton Mifflin Technical Support to request an additional eBook passkey. Students, please be prepared to provide evidence of your original eBook purchase. See How do I contact Customer Support?

How long does it take to download an eBook?

eBooks files run anywhere from 5-80 MB in size. Download times are approximately 5-10 minutes for fast connections; upwards of 30-60 minutes for slow connections.

A fast Internet connection (cable modem, DSL, LAN) is recommended for download stability and speed.

Please be patient. Remember that once the eBook is downloaded, it will be accessible when working offline for as long as you own your computer!

What happens if I lose my Internet connection when my eBook is downloading?

The Adobe Reader software "remembers" the transaction. Once you have successfully reconnected and launched Adobe Reader, it will continue the download from the point of interruption.

How do I access my eBooks after I've downloaded them?

Adobe Reader 7

Adobe Reader 7 automatically saves a copy of the downloaded eBook to your computer. Within Adobe Reader, select "Digital Editions" from the "File" pull-down menu to view the eBooks currently saved on your computer:

Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions automatically saves a copy of the downloaded eBook to your computer. Within Adobe Digital Editions, select “Library" to view the eBooks currently saved on your computer:

What happens to an eBook when I've finished reading it?

The downloaded eBook remains on your computer unless you manually delete it.

What security does my eBook have?

eBooks are encoded using sophisticated Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology that does not allow for sharing or loaning eBook copies. Here is a complete summary of Houghton Mifflin eBook security:

Sharing/Loaning Not allowed
Content Extraction/Copying Not allowed
Printing Allowed
Expires Never
Reading Out Loud Allowed
Recommended Software Version Adobe Reader 7.0.x
Minimum Software Version Adobe Reader 6.0.2
Suitable Devices Windows and Mac

If you attempt to open an eBook file that you don't "own", you will receive an error message upon attempt.

Can I transfer Adobe's "Read Out Loud" feature to my MP3 player?

Because eBooks require Adobe Reader, they are not compatible with portable music devices, which currently do not recognize such software.

Why is my eBook download failing?

If you receive an error while attempting to download Adobe Reader 7, Adobe Digital Editions, or a Houghton Mifflin eBook, it may be that the software cannot connect to the Internet through a firewall or proxy server.

A firewall is a software and hardware barrier protecting computers on a network from being accessed by computers outside the network. Such firewalls should not affect the activation of Adobe Reader software. However, some firewalls also keep internal users from getting outside the network. If you suspect that a firewall is preventing you from activating Adobe Reader, please contact your network administrator for instructions.

A proxy server enables users inside a firewall to connect to the Internet. By providing Internet Explorer with the address to the proxy server via the proxy settings, you can get through the firewall and activate the Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader uses the proxy settings in Internet Explorer. To resolve this issue, verify that the proxy settings in Internet Explorer enable you to get through your firewall. If you do not know the proxy settings to get through your firewall, consult your network administrator.

To check the proxy settings in Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.x, choose Tools > Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and click LAN Settings. To check the proxy settings in Internet Explorer 4.x, choose View > Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and click Advanced in the Proxy Settings Group.
