A 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday, shattering windows in downtown Seattle and rattling Portland, Oregon, for nearly half a minute. The epicenter was located 10 miles (20 km) northeast of OLYMPIA, Washington (National Earthquake Information Center).

On February 27, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt 20 miles (40 km) northwest of Copiapo, Chile (National Earthquake Information Center).

February 25, 2001

Today a 6.1 magnitude earthquake was felt 45 miles (70 km) southeast of Feyzabad, Afghanistan (National Earthquake Information Center).

On February 24, The Northern Molucca Sea experienced a 7.0 magnitude earthquake centered 90 miles (140 km) northwest of Ternate, Moluccas, Indonesia (National Earthquake Information Center).

On 19 February, lahars traveled down the NW flank of Tungurahua (Ecuador) via the Cusda Gorge. A steam column also rose 1 km above the summit.

On 15 February, Popocatepetl erupted and ejected an ash cloud that rose ~7.9 km. Popocatepetl remains at Alert Level Yellow Phase III with a 12 km-radius restricted area. ( Volcano World).

February 23, 2001

Central Peru experienced a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered 85 miles (130 km) northeast of Huancayo (National Earthquake Information Center).

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake was felt 55 miles (90 km) south of Bengkulu, Sumatera, Indonesia (National Earthquake Information Center).

February 19, 2001

The Cleveland volcano erupted explosively. Satellite imagery shows a large thermal anomaly. Further explosive eruptions could occur with little warning. ( Volcano World).

A tropical storm in the central Philippines killed seven people, officials said Monday, bringing the death toll to 17 and the number driven from their homes to nearly 1,700 in a week of pounding rain. (Environmental News Network).

Queen Charlotte Islands Region experienced a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered 90 miles (150 km) SSW of Craig, Alaska (National Earthquake Information Center).

Southern Sumatra, Indonesia experienced a 7.3 magnitude earthquake centered 85 miles (140 km) S of Bengkulu, Sumatera, Indonesia (National Earthquake Information Center).

February 10, 2001

Southern California experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered 25 miles ENE of San Bernardino (National Earthquake Information Center).

Merapi volcano erupted, and the status was changed to the maximum of Alert Level 4. The eruption produced a continuous major pyroclastic flow 7 km to the River Sat and 4.5 km to the River Lamat. The flow lasted ~2.5 hours, and the ash plume spread 60 km to the east. Instrumental monitoring is recording high seismicity. (Volcano World)

San Salvador was shaken by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake (National Earthquake Information Center).

Africa's most active volcano, Nyamuragira, began erupting and observers were able to view lava flows originating from two fissures (Volcano World).

A magnatude 5.3 earthquake shook Halmahera, Indonesia(National Earthquake Information Center).

Rotorua, New Zealand - On 26 January, a 2.5-3m hot pool erupted sending blocks and mud 100 meters into the air. The incident was the largest hydrothermal eruption in Kuirau Park since 1966. (Volcano World)

Western New York state was surprised by a minor earthquake registering a magnitude 2.9, centered about 22 km (15 miles) NE of Hornell. (National Earthquake Information Center) No damage was expected.

The Las Vegas, Nevada, region was rattled by a magnitude 3.3 earthquake centered some 20 km (13 miles) west of the city. (National Earthquake Information Center)

An aftershock of the Indian Earthquake of January 26th was recorded in western India, with a magnitude of 5.1 (National Earthquake Information Center)

Earthquakes of magnitudes 4.5 to 5.0 were reported in the Aleutian Islands; in the Fiji Islands Region and in Papua New Guinea in the southwestern Pacific Ocean; on the Reykjanes Ridge some 800 km (500 miles) SE of Greenland; off the coast of Svalbard , east of Greenland; and off the coast of El Salvador. The Reykjanes Ridge and Svalbard earthquakes occurred on different segments of the northern mid-Atlantic Ridge; the El Salvador earthquake was yet another aftershock of the killer earthquake of the 13th. The eastern San Francisco Bay area was rattled by an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5. There were no initial reports of serious damage or injuries. (National Earthquake Information Center). Another unrelated earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred in a sparsely populated portion of the California Coast Ranges about 200 miles to the north. In what is likely still another aftershock of the El Salvador earthquake of January 13th, another earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck with nearly the same epipcenter off the coast of El Salvador in Central America. (National Earthquake Information Center)

According to Ecuador's Instituto Geofisico, an eruption occurred at Tungurahua Volcano on 18 January. An ash cloud rising to 6.7 km above sea level resulted from the explosion. (Volcano World)

On 19 January, the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia raised the Alert Level from 1 to 2 on Kelut Volcano, on the island of Java. The temperature of the crater lake increased and the volcano inflated 5.5-6 mm. On 21 January, a 5 cm increase in the water level occurred. (Volcano World)

On 28 January, the partial collapse of the lava dome created continuous pyroclastic flows and molten lava avalanches down the SW and W flanks of Merapi Volcano in Indonesia, for up to 4.5 km. On 26 January, a 2.5-3m hot pool (Spring 721) erupted on New Zealand's Rotorua Volcano, sending blocks and mud 100 meters into the air. The eruption created a crater of ~10-12m in diameter. (Volcano World).
