Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico erupted a cloud of ash. It was the biggest eruption of the volcano since August (CNN/Reuters).

Quakes and volcanos shake the Kamchatka Peninsula today.
A magnitude 7.7 quake (followed by a number of large aftershocks) occurred along the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia at 11:26 GMT. A Pacific-wide tsunami warning was issued and later recalled when a wave was not detected (Reuters; Washington Post/AP). No damage has been reported in this remote part of Russia.

*KVERT reported that an explosive eruption of nearby Bezymianny Volcano began without warning today about 17:30 GMT (AVO update; KVERT update; Washington Post/AP). The eruption generated a 30,000-foot ash cloud. The volcano is located about 100 km inland of the mag. 7.7 quake that occurred earlier.
