- Flash floods and a landslide are responsible for at least 65 deaths in Nepal (Washington Post/AP). "Experts have warned that worse landslides could occur on the lower Himalayas in coming years if villagers and real-estate developers do not stop logging that makes the slopes vulnerable to heavy rain."
- *Large earthquakes today rattled the Mariana Islands (mag. 6.2) and the Queen Charlotte Islands (mag. 6.0).

- The South Sandwich Islands were shaken by a magnitude 5.8 quake.
- August 28, 1998
- A magnitude 6.2 quake occurred on the Minahassa Peninsula in Indonesia.
- August 27, 1998
- Three people were killed by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in southern China (Washington Post/AP).
- August 23, 1998
- A magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred off the coast of Nicaragua.
- *Luzon was shaken by a mag. 5.8 quake.
- August 20, 1998
- Earthquakes today shook the Bonin Islands (mag. 6.2) and the Rat Islands (mag. 6.0).
- August 19, 1998
- Torrential rains in a remote area of northern India caused severe landslides that killed almost 200 people (Discovery Online).
- August 18, 1998
- Wollongong, a city in southern Austrailia, was isolated today by flash floods and mudslides (Discovery Online).
- August 17, 1998
- Mudslides along the Italian-Austrian border killed 5 people (Discovery Online).
- August 16, 1998
- A fifteen minute eruption of Popocatepetl volcano occurred today. The volcano created a 5-km collumn of ash, however no damage was reported (Volcano World).
- August 13, 1998
- "Fish and Wildlife Service personnel reported that the usual white steaming from Chiginagak volcano fumaroles changed for a time to puffs of black ash accompanied by a greenish-yellow gas and steam plume rising about 500 to 1000 ft above the volcano." (Alaska Volcano Observatory)
- August 12, 1998
- A mag. 5.4 quake shook the central coast of California. No damage was reported (CNN/AP).
- *Flooding continues in South Korea where 189 people have been killed and over 100,000 have been left homeless since heavy rains began last week (Washington Post/AP).
- August 11, 1998
- The crest of the Yangtze River floods in China continues to move downstream. Today the crest passed the city of Jiujiang (Washington Post/AP).
- August 10, 1998
- The Nicobar Islands, located north of the island of Sumatra, experienced a magnitude 6.0 earthquake.
- August 5, 1998
- At least 11 people were killed when heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in South Korea (Washington Post/AP).
- *A magnitude 5.9 quake occurred on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge.
- August 4, 1998
- Northwestern Equador was shaken by magnitude 5.7 and 7.1 quakes today. Three people have been reported killed and hundreds have been left homeless (Washington Post/AP).

- August 1, 1998
- At least 32 people have been killed after heavy rains caused mudslides in northern Iran (Washington Post/AP)
- *Flash floods in South Korea have killed 20 campers and at least 70 more are still missing (Washington Post/AP). Floods occurred after 5-1/2 inches of rain fell in an hour.
