Ask Jeeves!

This search engine responds to natural-language queries. such as "When did Washington cross the Delaware?" Just type in your question and Jeeves will attempt to find a web page with the answer.
The Invisible Web

This engine indexes sites that are invisible to other, regular web search engine technology.
AltaVista

One of the original Web search engines with academic roots, and still one of the largest and most popular.
Lycos

Another well-known search engine with roots in the academic world.
Northern Light

This engine's "Power Search" feature is very useful, allowing you to screen out commercial web sites (and Northern Light's own "special collections" findings, which require a fee for access). Returns links and, on the left side of the page, folders with more links, arranged by subcategories based on your initial search.
Yahoo!

The original Web directory. You may search by keyword (powered by Google), or surf by category. Each category you select reveals more subcategories. Keep selecting categories until you find what you need.
