Annis Boudinot Stockton
(1736-1801)
Annis Boudinot Stockton, prolific and
well-known New Jersey poet, circulated her verse mainly among friends and other
women poets. She was well known to the cultural elite of her day, and she wrote
several poems to her friend George Washington, among other statesmen. From
childhood, Stockton was a close friend of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, and, like
Fergusson, she held literary salons for an elite Princeton circle. Publications
of her pastoral and sentimental verse appeared under her pseudonym, “Amelia” (or
Emelia), while other publications, twenty-one in number, appeared under her
initials, “A. S.,” or anonymously.
