Nathaniel Evans
(1742-1767)
Evans was born in Philadelphia to a merchant
who wished his son to follow in his footsteps. Yet Evans followed the
encouragement of Provost William Smith at the College of Philadelphia instead.
After completing an M.A. at the College, Evans traveled to London and was
ordained a minister in the Church of England. He took a post as a missionary
for the Church, with the Society for the Propagation of the Bible in Foreign
Parts, situated in Haddonfield, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from
Philadelphia. Although he himself lamented the early death of his friend,
Thomas Godfrey, Evans died of tuberculosis at age twenty-five; William Smith
gathered his poems and published them, titled Poems on Several Occasions
(1772).
