Born in England and educated at Oxford, Dawson moved to Virginia, becoming a tutor in moral philosophy at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. He held several important offices in Virginia’s colonial government and in 1743 became president of the college. He brought out his collection of verse, Poems on Several Occasions (1736), anonymously and published in magazines witty and polished work  like the poem in the Heath Anthology.
