Sarah Whipple Goodhue
(1641-1681)
Of the poets collected in this group, Sarah Whipple Goodhue was the
first native-born writer. She was born into a middle-class family of merchants;
she married Joseph Goodhue (1639–1697), who was to become a leader of Ipswich,
her native town. Her volume, The Copy of a Valedictory (1681), a
religious and monitory book written in anticipation of her death, was published
after she died giving birth to twins.
