Description of the course in which the assignment was used:
An interdisciplinary, interethnic (Asian American and African American) studies course for first year UCLA students. Students attended a large lecture and then met in smaller groups (20 students) for discussion. This assignment was done in discussion section.

What pedagogical goals do you think this assignment achieves:
The assignment helped students understand how to close read a text, and how to move beyond commenting on specific elements in a text, to make connections about how those different elements are deployed by the author. It also modelled the approach they would take in their midterm projects.
