Douglas A. Bernstein (1942- )

Born in Pittsburgh in1942, Bernstein earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and an M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Northwestern University in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He taught Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at Western Washington University in Bellingham, and is currently professor emeritus at the University of Illinois.

Bernstein has conducted research on the modification of smoking behavior and on the measurement and treatment of anxiety. He has placed strong emphasis on the teaching of psychology, actively promoting efforts to improve teaching programs nationwide, and has won numerous awards for his work with both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Bernstein has co-authored and co-edited numerous books in introductory psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, clinical psychology, criminal behavior, applied psychology, and progressive relaxation. The selection in Thinking Critically is from his introductory psychology textbook.
