Chapter 5: Pioneers in Education

You can enhance the following activities from the Instructor's Resource Manual by incorporating the resources available on the World Wide Web.

Manner of Influence

The Instructor's Resource Manual suggests:
Students should create a list of innovative ideas in education that have appeared in professional journals over the past decade and develop an annotated bibliography that provides background information about each innovation.

To assist students with their research, you can point out that web sites of key professional journals may have archives, for at least the last few years, available online. Here is one site that offers links to many professional journals:

This is a linked list of education-related publications, created at the University of Missouri.

Pioneers in Educational Theory

The Instructor's Resource Manual suggests two activities:
  • Have students identify the characteristics that make those in the chapter pioneers in educational theory. Next examine the professional literature and interview local educators and professors to identify contemporary educators who might possess the same characteristics.
  • Assign pairs of students to read brief selections from the works of the pioneering theorists. Have them prepare presentations that illustrate the key ideas of the selections.
Sites where students can find specific works of the pioneering theorists are listed in the student section of this site. You can also direct students to the following web sites to help with this research:
