Read the following case carefully; then answer the questions that follow. Although answers may vary, responses should be consistent with the information presented in Chapter 11 of the textbook.
You are the principal of a public high school. A young man who was born with a profound visual impairment has just moved into the community with his family and will be a student in your school this coming fall. Brad is 15 years old and is a sophomore. He will be the first student with a significant vision loss enrolled in your school.
Brad reads braille fluently but is not performing very well academically. His attitude is good, however, and he had many friends at his former high school. He is excited about entering your school but is a little nervous about making new friends and adjusting academically.
- Look at your budget and available facilities. What would be the easiest adaptation for you to make so that Brad can be taught in the least restrictive environment?
- What can you and your staff do to help Brad with his academic and social adjustment?
- What special skills would you want to focus on? How would you develop those skills?
- If you had the funding, which technological advances would you incorporate into Brad's educational program? Why?
