Approaches to Assessment

We list and describe a range of assessments of student understanding in the chapter activities in Part 2. We do so in order to illustrate the important link between instruction and assessment. Some of the assessments are formative, meaning that they provide on-going understanding of how students are making sense of the ideas and activities. Examples of formative assessments are fastwrites and drawing activities. We also include summative assessments, which help us assess our students' progress at the end of the course. The principal summative assessments are the unit plan and the reflective narrative.

In this section, we talk about some of the ideas that guide our assessment choices, why we chose the assessments we did, and how these assessments might be graded.
