Read this guide for highlights on changes made for the 5th Edition, as well as new resources to help your students.
In the Fifth Edition of
The Confident Student, Carol
Kanar has enhanced the coverage of career exploration and skills development
to supplement the great self-management and academic skills already available
to college students. The vital study skills, critical thinking strategies,
self-discovery techniques, and self-management tools that have made previous
editions of
The Confident Student successful have
been retained in the Fifth Edition. The broadened coverage of career readiness
found throughout the text, as well as in a new Chapter 15: Building Career
Skills, are heavily tied to the nationally recognized SCANS research on
workplace skills. The expanded coverage on career readiness is bolstered
by an enhanced ancillary package which includes a new HM Assessment and
Portfolio Builder CD-ROM with access to the web-based Career Resource
Center. A title-based website and new HM Class Prep CD-ROM with PowerPoint
Slides is available along with a revised Instructor's Resource Manual.
For a detailed description of these resources, and others available with
The Confident Student, 5th Edition, read
Changes
to the Ancillary Package after
Chapter-by-Chapter
Changes.
In addition to a new Chapter on Building Career Skills (see below for
more in-depth information), the inside front cover now features a correlation
chart between SCANS skills and the chapters in the text. The
Thinking
Ahead exercises have been retitled
Thinking Ahead
about Career, and updated to link to Houghton Mifflin's
Career Resource Center. The introductory paragraphs for
each chapter also contain one or more bold terms in red that alert students
to the workplace skills that correspond to the academic skills covered
in that chapter. The Skill Finder, already a great tool to initiate self-discovery,
has been revised to include more topics and a more detailed analysis.
Again, a correlation between concepts addressed in the Skill Finder, and
resources available on
Career Resource Center are made
explicit in this assessment, to maximize the student's contact with helpful
aids.
Skill Finder
The Skill Finder has been expanded to 110 questions to help student determine
their confidence index: a measure of how much they already know about
the skills covered in the book. Students respond using a four-point scale,
and then tally the results to determine which skills need development
or improvement. An asterisk identifies specific statements as essential
workplace skills; words in italics identify key terms explained throughout
the chapters of the text. The Skill Finder is also available in a highly
interactive format online, complete with links to articles in the
Career
Resource Center to help students further develop essential workplace
skills, and interactive flashcards of the key words and their definitions.
