How to Use the Student Website
Read this document for a discussion of the various activities included on the Student site, including suggestions on classroom use.
The student site for The Confident Student provides activities for additional skills practice and review. Also included is new but related material that expands the scope of the text, providing more opportunities for success in college, life, and work. Explore the web site and encourage your students to use its features in whatever ways best suit the needs of your course. The following list of features with suggestions for their use is offered only as a starting point.
Skill Finder This test is reproduced from the text but available here in an interactive format. The skill finder identifies all the learning strategies covered in the text and helps students determine which skills they already possess, which skills need developing or improving, and how confident they are about their skills.
ACE Practice Quizzes These short objective tests quiz students on their knowledge of chapter concepts, are automatically scored, and provide instant feedback. Students can use the quizzes on their own, discuss them with you in a student-teacher conference, or collect them in a portfolio.
Exercises Two or more exercises for each chapter provide additional skills practice and opportunities for students to expand their knowledge of chapter concepts. Assign them as you would any of the textbook exercises, or encourage students to do them on their own for practice.
Forms such as the weekly schedule from Chapter 6 are also available for students to download as needed.
Remembering Cultural Differences These articles examine learning strategies within the context of a diverse college community and larger society. The articles make good topics for class discussion.
Skill Builder Library The Library contains five additional Thinking Ahead About Career exercises like the one in each textbook chapter. Each exercise contains a scenario followed by questions that help students make the connection between college skills and workplace competencies. Students can do the exercises on their own, or you can assign one or more of them for group work.
The Library also includes articles from several different disciplines—English (writing, vocabulary, research and library skills), math, and science. These articles suggest learning skills students can use across the disciplines. Use them for independent reading or for sharing in group discussion or reports.
