Throughout the past nine editions of Becoming a Master Student, students
have been provided with a framework for examining their lives from a self-discovery
perspective. The Tenth Edition continues this self-created, values-based approach
to life and learning. Students are inspired and motivated to acquire and develop
the skills needed for success in college and throughout life. The Tenth Edition
focuses on the student, helping to prepare him or her right from the start
to planning by setting goals, staying motivated, and avoiding procrastination
in order to be successful in their studies and beyond. Two new features have
students actively involved in the learning process:
- Student Voices show by example, using success stories from real college
students who have used strategies learned in the textbook;
- Workplace Applications translate the application of school related strategies
from the textbook to related issues in the workplace.
In the Tenth Edition you will also find:
- Reorganized chapter structure including a Communicating chapter
that combines different methods of communication, a Resources chapter
that explores using the library, managing money, and making use of technology
and a separate Health chapter focusing on maintaining a sound mind
and body.
- Improved reading coverage.
- New article on overcoming procrastination.
- New article on managing money.
- Updated technology with more application on our web site (http://collegesurvival.college.hmco.com)
- Five New Master Student Profiles.

Learning Styles Inventory
The material surrounding the
Learning Styles Inventory (LSI) has been
revised to help students complete the inventory more easily. The word "stage"
has been replaced with the word "mode" to help students understand that while
they may have one learning style preference, they can work towards utilizing
the different modes to become more well-rounded learners.
The Learning
Styles Application at the end of each chapter has been updated to incorporate
these changes as well.
Interpreting Your Learning Style Graph has been
updated to more clearly explain the four modes of learning, using key question
words to help students understand the different modes. A
Student Voice
and
Workplace Applications feature were added to this section to show
students an example of how to apply this information to their studies and
in their careers.
Design
The design for the chapter openers has been revised to help guide students
to start off by reading the text prior to completing the Journal Entry. Each
Journal Entry,
Exercise, and
Practicing Critical Thinking
exercise has a shaded box behind it to help students differentiate between
articles and activities. A new Internet Icon indicates opportunities for students
to explore the Internet for further information or to access Houghton Mifflin's
College Survival/
Becoming a Master Student web site (
