MAKING A MATCH
Interviewing – A Mutual Look:
- There are plenty of people with qualifications similar to yours. Some are better than you, some aren’t as good. So what makes the final decision as to who gets hired where? It all comes down to chemistry. A vast majority of job failures have much less to do with ability than whether or not a person’s style and temperament matches the organization.
- Understand that the interview is not just for the company’s benefit. Often, this is your best glimpse into whether this company or job will be a good one for you. Take advantage of this, and be prepared.
Finding Out What You Need To Know:
- Your best chance of really evaluating a company, and of looking good at the interview, is to do your homework beforehand. Researching the company, both formally and informally, can give you an incredible edge over those who don’t, or who do a cursory job.
- The basic resources, annual reports, marketing information, articles, can be gotten the same way you gather that information for research papers. This is a minimum requirement.
- Most companies have websites, often including information geared to potential hires. Check it out.
- To increase your chances of success, go beyond that--talk to faculty to find out if they know any alumni who work for that company. Ask the same question at the career center. Call their marketing/communication departments and ask questions.
