  1. What are some of the changes that have taken place at Sears in the last few years? What forces seem to have been the major reasons for the changes?

  2. What areas of change have been involved (structure and design, technology and operations, people)? Give examples of each.

  3. Do you think that Sears is anticipating and responding to change appropriately? Why or why not?

Another firm that experienced a drop in sales is information technology firm Hewlett-Packard (HP). In a move similar to the Lands' End acquisition made by Sears, HP merged with PC maker Compaq in 2002. Visit the HP [http://www.hp.com/] Web site and compare HP's results with those obtained by Sears. Have the changes at HP been more effective or less effective than those at Sears? Why do you think this is so?
