The "Today’s Management Issues" themed insert (p. 15 of the text) compares the management style of Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft with that of Michael Eisner, CEO of Disney.

Access these two companies’ web sites by clicking on their names above. After viewing the online information, answer these questions:
  1. What evidence can you find of the various management activities in the web sites of these companies?
  2. Can you identify levels and areas of management in the information provided in these companies’ web sites?
Internet Exercise

The opening incident in Chapter 1 focuses on recent managerial activities at Motorola— a leader in communications and electronics systems and manufacturing. In the 1990’s, the company underwent shifts in its organization, leadership, and strategy, as it attempted to keep pace with rapid changes and stiff competition in the industry.

View the firm’s web site. Examine the company and all of its activities and operations, but focus in particular on the organization and the activities associated with its operation. Then answer the following questions:
  1. What can you determine about the extent of Motorola’s operations?
  2. What areas of management can you identify from its web site?
  3. How does this information relate to that presented in the text?
Explore Further

Examine the web sites of Motorola’s competitors and compare their operations and activities. For example, how does Nokia compare to Motorola? Compare the companies’ history, management style, products, and operations. What do you think is the cause of the differences you find?
