Chapter 11: Filling Out Job Applications

Many companies require all applicants at every level to complete job applications. This small, but simple step is another way for the employer to judge you, your thoroughness and attention to detail. Keep in mind that the employer may use this document to check your work references, work experience and education claims so be honest! When filling out an application, use pen, print clearly and neatly complete every line. Come prepared with your work history and names and contact information of references written on an index card or sample application you've completed at home.

Typically, applications ask for your name, address and phone number, as well as your social security number, the name of an emergency contact, and of course, your education and work experience. Think carefully when you complete the section asking your desired salary. Many mark this question, "negotiable" or give a salary range. Applications will also ask whether or not you're a citizen and if you've been convicted of a crime. Some inquire about your hobbies and interests and foreign language ability. Don't forget to sign and date the application when done. This confirms that you have, to the best of your knowledge, completed the questions accurately, and is the only way for your application to be considered valid.
