Chapter 9: Organizing and Surviving the Job Hunt

Finding the right job can be a long-term endeavor. If you're seeking entry-level employment your search can take several months. Those seeking higher paying or more specialized jobs can expect a search period lasting up to a year or more. During this time, it is critical to concentrate on managing stress as well as managing the job hunt. Throughout the process, you should treat job hunting as your job. Practice diligent time management skills and maintain self-discipline. Making daily do lists and utilizing a time planner are essential.

Write down and review goals. Celebrate accomplishment and find outlets for stress to help stay charged and focused.

If all the recommended job hunting techniques have been implemented and the job hunt is still unproductive, it may be time to do a little troubleshooting. Target specific problem areas such as a weak resume, overcoming shyness, or poor interview performance. Finally, remember that there's no shame in asking for help. Friends, family and professional career counselors may offer support and useful tips. Take advantage of all the help available to you!
