Chapter 4: Have You Considered?

Many job hunters look for employment in traditional places, without having considered some of the alternatives. The federal government, for example, has more employees than the first sixteen of the Fortune 500 companies added together, and its job openings can be accessed through state and federal personnel offices and the Internet. Don't forget to investigate local government positions too.

Take into account the opportunities offered by nonprofit organizations, as well. Clarify your goals and the issues that interest you, and then learn which organizations focus on these issues. Then, apply all the traditional job-seeking skills you've learned.

Although it may be more impressive to your friends and relatives to say you have a job at a large, well-known company, don't overlook the advantages of working for a small company. You might find they offer increased prospects for getting hired with limited experience. Many small businesses will allow you added responsibilities, ideal for quickly learning about your field, as well more control in your work and a less rigid workplace hierarchy.

Although it's the dream of many, few give enough credence to the possibility of opening their own business. Carefully consider the positives and negatives of self-employment, taking a hard look at the personality traits you'll need to be an entrepreneur. You may soon find yourself doing the market research and developing a business plan.

Occasionally, job-hunting roadblocks indicate the need to take a detour. In the process of job hunting, many decide to change their career direction entirely to one that better suits the market or their own evolving needs. It may be time to clarify your dream job, or evaluate the need for further training or education.
