INTRODUCTION
This application will introduce you to Internet resources that can assist you in preparing for a career in human resource management (HRM). You will be directed to a web-site of the largest HR organization in the world (i.e., Society for Human Resource Management). This site will provide you with information on employment opportunities in HR, information about HR certification and the issues that are currently facing HR professionals. These issues are discussed in Chapter 23 of French's Human Resource Management, 5th ed.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Having successfully completed this application, you will be able to:
  • Access web sites that provide HR career information.
  • Understand the changes that are expected in HR.
  • Explain the trends that are taking place in Human Resource Management.
  • Assess your current knowledge of HR via a brief interactive online test.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS Instruction 1: Access the following web site http://www.shrm.org and scroll down the left side of the SHRM Home Page. Then click on "HR Links" and answer Question 1
Question 1: What general categories of information are available via HR Links?

Instruction 2: Click on "Certification." Locate the topic "Test Your Knowledge." Go ahead, test your knowledge to quickly assess your level of preparedness for the HRCI exam.

Instruction 3: Click on the "HR Channels" and answer Questions 2.

Question 2: What are the human resource management topics covered in HR Channels?

Instruction 4: Follow the links of Workplace Trends to locate "Workplace Forecast: A Strategic Outlook 2002-2003" and answer Questions 3, 4 and 5.
Question 3: What are the implications for HR regarding the demographic changes that are anticipated?
Question 4: What are the implications for HR regarding the political outlook?
Question 5: What are likely to be the top ten workplace trends in the coming year?
