Chapter 4: The Global Environment

Identify five foreign-owned companies that have large U.S. operations. For example, Toyota, a Japanese firm, has a large U.S. subsidiary that is legally incorporated as Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Similarly, Nestle, a Swiss firm, owns Carnation Foods in the United States.

Search the Internet to see if you can locate separate Web sites for both the parent company and its domestic subsidiary. Next determine the extent to which the Web site pairs contain any information regarding human resource issues. Assuming that you locate some information, see whether you can identify any parallels, extensions, or even inconsistencies between them.

Questions

  1. What role might the Internet play in helping an international business coordinate its international human resources?
  2. What risks does an international business run by relying on the Internet to address human resource issues?
