Instructions: Use the SEC Page provided at this site to help you search for a particular company's latest Form 10-K or view any of the Form 10-Ks listed below. Locate Schedules 5 and 6 and the company's Statement of Cash Flows to determine gains or losses from dispositions of property, plant, and equipment.

Extended Research Activities

1. Search the SEC EDGAR archives for Form 10-K for a company of your choice.
  • Use your browser's "find in this page" feature to locate the word depreciation.
  • How often did the word depreciation appear?
  • In what context was the word depreciation mentioned?


2. Use your browser's "find in this page" feature to locate the Property and Equipment footnote. Copy this section and print a copy. (See below for an example from Excite, Inc.'s Form 10-K)
  • Describe changes in plant and equipment from the prior year.
  • Describe changes in depreciation from the prior year.


Property and Equipment
Property and equipment are stated at cost, net of accumulated depreciation and amortization, which includes the amortization of assets recorded under capital leases. Property and equipment are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets (generally one to five years.) Equipment purchased under capital leases is amortized on a straight-line basis over the lesser of the estimated useful life of the asset or the lease term. Property and equipment, at cost, consist of the following:
